Simple things can be very satisfying. I needed a bag for for the new cheese board (a piece of slate, must be no longer trendy because it was on sale.) I had the perfect fabric for a protective sleeve, thick cotton flannel, except I had already made it into a half-baked pair of test pants that I’m never going to finish. Out came the seam ripper and I pieced together a couple pieces. A couple more seams later and it was done.
So there’s some extra random seams where they might otherwise be unexpected. One more UFO disposed of and a needed object constructed. I’d consider that a success. After the past month of dealing with jackets it was a nice instant-gratification project.

What a great idea, I would love to find a slate cheese board!

I got mine at Cowgirl Creamery, a cheese shop that everyone else would probably consider a fancy foodie place but is actually very practical and convenient for me. “Artisan food” is a huge thing right now in food snob circles and there is lots of it here. San Francisco is weird that way sometimes, in the living in the shadow of landmarks sense.
They get a lot of tourists at the Ferry Building so even the straight food places are more than just practical grocery. I guess the holiday shoppers didn’t much go for these so they were on sale, and I needed a cheese board.
As these things go, slate is ok. I may strip the felt off the bottom to make it less fussy to clean. I can always get a loose piece of something to put under it. If I wanted to be pretentious I would write the names of the cheeses in chalk on the stone. But I’m lazy and do not otherwise have cause to keep chalk around the house. This is probably for the best.
